Cleft lip

Cleft lip is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s mouth or lips are not fully formed during the pregnancy period. It appears as a split or a gap in the upper lip or/and roof of the mouth. Cleft lip can be affected either from one side or both.

Cleft lip is not just a cosmetic issue as it creates problems like:

  • Difficulty in feeding

  • Hearing problems – vulnerable to ear infections

  • Speech problems

  • Dental problems – child’s teeth do not develop properly

Cleft lip is mostly caused due to obesity during pregnancy, excessive smoking or drinking, lack of folic acid or taking medicines like anti-seizure medications and steroid tablets.
